What is Minecraft for Education?
Minecraft for Education provides a fun learning platform that is set to transform your computing lessons. Imagine the scenario. Thirty children in your computing class fully engaged and ready to learn as you deliver the news that today, you’ll be ‘playing’ Minecraft for the duration of your lesson.
The clever part to all of this is that children will be readily picking up essential coding skills just through the journey Minecraft takes them on. For those of you who are unaware, the quote below details exactly what Minecraft is.
“Minecraft: Education Edition is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination.”
(Minecraft for Education website, January 2018, https://education.minecraft.net/)
With Minecraft for Education, you can do the following;
- Collaborate on projects with classmates
- Share your work with your class
- Personalise your game
- Play in a secure environment
Coding capabilities with code builder
As the computing curriculum becomes further embedded into schools, tools such as Minecraft for Education can provide an engaging way of helping students develop their coding experience. This aspect cannot be underestimated. Often one of the largest barriers to learning is student engagement. If students can be enticed to develop their skills in an experience they may already be interested in, then the teachers job suddenly becomes much easier.
The program blurs the lines between gaming and learning. With coding set to be a key skill demanded by employers in the future, programs such as these will become more prevalent. The key for this to work is the adoption of this approach by teachers. Forcing yourself to develop new skills in areas such as coding will not only help you teach the subjects, but heighten the knowledge and understanding passed onto the students.
Code builder is a separate addition to Minecraft for Education. Your Robin and Martin technician will be able to advise fully on how to get setup with the correct software for your classes.
